The Control Grip

“If I don’t manage it, it falls apart.”

That’s the story you’ve been holding onto. Let’s take a good look at it.

How it shows up

You plan everyone’s logistics. You redo work that was done adequately, because adequately is not how you would have done it. You have a backup plan for the backup plan. Delegating anything that matters feels riskier than just doing it yourself, so you don’t.

And you’re tired in a way that feels like responsibility, which makes it very hard to argue with.

This goes well beyond being organized. Somewhere along the way, you became the person nothing is allowed to happen without.

What it costs

You’ve become the single point of failure in your own life. Every plan runs through you, so every plan drains you. Rest starts to feel like negligence, because if you’re resting, who’s watching the whole thing?

The doing is only half of it. The truly exhausting part is the monitoring. The mind that never fully clocks out because it’s holding the entire map. Ask me how I know this....

Nothing has gone wrong

Here’s the part that matters. Nothing has gone wrong. You’ve practiced the thought that safety comes from managing everything, and you’ve practiced it so thoroughly that it feels like your personality.

It’s a thought. A very well rehearsed one.

Loosen the grip on the story that it all falls apart without you, and you get to find out what actually happens. Usually? Far less than the story predicted.

One small shift to try this week

Once this week, deliberately leave one thing un-managed. Something real but survivable. Then compare what actually happened against what the story said would happen.

You’re gathering evidence. And the evidence is what changes the thought.

The question to carry

How could this be easy?

The Control grip assumes hard is the only responsible option. This question doesn’t. Ask it before you take over, and notice what it opens up.
