The Old Role Grip
“This is who I am. That’s settled.”
That’s the story you’ve been holding onto. Let’s take a good look at it.
How it shows up
You’re the fixer. The reliable one. The strong one. The achiever. Those jobs stopped fitting a while ago, and you’re still showing up for every shift.
You measure today’s life against a definition of success written decades ago. And there’s a quiet flatness after wins that were supposed to feel like something. Everyone congratulates you, and you stand there wondering why it landed like nothing.
What it costs
You’re fulfilling the terms of a contract you never consciously signed. And you’re scoring yourself as behind on a scoreboard that expired.
That’s a lot of effort spent earning points in a game you would never choose today.
Nothing has gone wrong
Here’s the part that matters. Nothing has gone wrong. You’ve outgrown a definition, the way we outgrow a role or a routine. The dissatisfaction is information about the scoreboard, and a scoreboard is a set of thoughts.
Loosen the grip on the story that you are permanently the person you decided to be at twenty-five, and the same life starts producing different evidence.
One small shift to try this week
Take one standing measure of your success and ask it two questions. Did I choose this, or did I inherit it? And if I met this standard perfectly for ten more years, would that be a life I’d call thriving?
The question to carry
How do I want to feel?
The old scoreboard only ever measured what you achieved. This question starts the new one, and it’s the one question the old role never thought to ask.
Want to keep loosening this one?
