The Badge That Doesn't Fit Anymore: Rethinking Who You Are in Midlife

There comes a point in every leader's journey when what once felt like a badge of honor becomes a burden.

You know the one. The way you show up when things go sideways. The way you hold it together when no one else can. The way you step in, perform, protect, and fix.

At some point, those traits probably saved you. Maybe they even built your career. But what if they don't fit anymore?

In a recent coaching session, I used an analogy that seemed to hit home:

"It’s like you earned an Academy Award for playing a role that used to define you. Now, the award's on a shelf... but you're still showing up as that character."

This is the kind of reflection that's necessary in midlife. Not because you're failing, but because you're evolving.

Stress Management Isn't About Doing Less

We talk a lot about stress management in leadership. Time-blocking, breathing exercises, vacation days.

But the real shift happens when you examine the roles you’re still playing out of habit.

If your default is to take charge in conflict, be the strong one, or absorb everyone else’s discomfort, it’s worth asking:

  • Is this who I want to be now?
  • Is this aligned with my current values?
  • Or is this a performance I keep repeating because it used to work?

Conflict Shows You the Roles That No Longer Work

Midlife has a way of bringing simmering conflicts to the surface — at home, at work, in relationships.

Often, those moments of tension are less about the issue at hand and more about the outdated roles we instinctively step into or the metaphorical badges we wear.

The fixer. The explainer. The provider. The peacekeeper.

But what if your capacity to lead isn’t found in holding it all together, but in letting go of what no longer fits?

Reconnect to Your Values and Feel Calmer

This isn’t about quitting. It’s about refining.

It’s about asking: What part of me is trying to earn another badge I no longer need?

When you let go of old performance patterns, you create space to lead from presence rather than pressure. That’s where calm lives.

And from there, everything gets clearer:

  • Boundaries are easier to name.
  • Conversations feel less charged.
  • Your values show up in real time, not just in theory.
